Clark Builders successfully delivered Phase III of the Brentwood Care facility, located adjacent to the bustling Foothills Hospital in Calgary. This phase involved the construction of a new five-storey wood-frame healthcare and continuing care building, introducing 194 additional beds and featuring a convenient single-storey underground parkade. Notably, the existing facility (Phase I and II) remained fully operational throughout the construction process.
As part of the project, the previous 14,500 square foot single-storey building was removed, while preserving a 2,200 square foot basement in a section of the core area. Emphasizing the importance of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), the project team underwent rigorous training and implemented construction practices to minimize dust, contamination, noise, and disruptions to the functioning facility. Furthermore, meticulous logistics planning was undertaken to minimize the impact of construction operations on neighboring residential communities, traffic along 16th Avenue, and the Foothills Hospital.
One notable aspect of the project was the design and construction of the Brain Trauma Unit at Brentwood Care Centre. The facility offers a comprehensive range of long-term care programs, with the first floor dedicated to independent living suites and the upper floors providing specialized mental health care and rehabilitation services. Within the Dementia wing, a unique "Butterfly Paint" system was implemented, enabling residents to familiarize themselves with different spaces, enhancing their sense of security and spatial awareness. The use of vibrant colors in communal areas helped attract individuals and encouraged social interaction among residents in the wing. The design of the dementia wings prioritized mental stimulation, incorporating textured fabrics on the walls, anti-ligature objects that produced stimulating sounds, and artwork created by the residents themselves. Intercare, the organization overseeing the project, aimed to create spaces that evoked emotions of happiness, peacefulness, and stimulation.
Overall, Clark Builders' successful completion of Phase III of the Brentwood Care facility showcases their expertise in delivering complex projects within operational environments. The incorporation of IPC measures, meticulous logistics planning, and thoughtful design elements have contributed to the creation of a facility that provides exceptional care while promoting well-being and positive experiences for its residents.
