City of Edmonton Centennial Garage

Situated in South Edmonton, the LEED® NC Silver City of Edmonton Centennial Garage is a state-of-the-art facility built to house and maintain over 250 buses while also providing office and meeting space for administrative staff. This building is constructed of an envelope of precast concrete panels and metal-clad insulation panels around a steel frame. The maintenance area of the facility was equipped with 17 hydraulic piston hoist bays, a body shop, tire bay, lube bay, and an interior and steam cleaning bus wash bay. The structural elements of this area were constructed using open web steel joists and structural steel, spanning over 140 feet. 

The facility features a heated slab, supported by four boilers, providing warmth in cold weather. Additionally, over 40 roof-mounted roof-top units/mechanical unit air-handlers were installed to regulate temperature and ventilation throughout the building. To facilitate convenient fueling, two underground diesel tanks with a capacity of 90,000 litres each were incorporated.

The project integrated several environmentally friendly features and innovative systems to enhance sustainability and employee well-being. A solar wall was installed to provide heating for the facility—this renewable energy source helped reduce reliance on traditional heating methods, thereby lowering the environmental impact. Additionally, a specialized low-volume bus wash and undercarriage wash system were implemented, using recycled water. This approach conserves water resources while maintaining effective cleaning standards.

The project also prioritized energy efficiency through the implementation of an eco-friendly controlled lighting system. This system was designed to optimize lighting levels while minimizing energy consumption. Furthermore, an innovative ventilation system was installed to ensure the safety and comfort of employees—effectively removing fumes from occupied areas, to reduce potential health risks.
In 2021, Clark Builders was selected for a multi-site construction management contract to design, install, and commission five solar photovoltaic systems in various locations across the city. One of these sites, the Centennial Garage, was selected to house a 417.5 kW solar array. The array was composed of 970 solar modules, expertly installed on the roof using ballasted racking methods, without any need for roof penetration.
