The Atlantic Avenue Art Block project consisted of the construction of a four-storey, brick, metal panel and glass exterior façade supported by a concrete and structural steel building with a curved metal panel clad roofline. The four floors are made up of retail space, offices, and a large gallery space.
One of our challenges was the key design component— a custom, giant contemporary free form stainless steel sculpture valued at $1,000,000 in the four and half storey high atrium. The sculpture stands over 50 feet in height and had to be installed before constructing the atrium roof. We needed to devise a plan to deliver, rig, hoist and install this sculpture, and our equipment, management and field staff were an integral part of the solution. The entire process was flawlessly executed over the course of a few days.
Because the site is located near the Bow and the Elbow rivers in Calgary, we set up a major dewatering on site to remove the water for the construction of two levels of underground parkade. The project was expanded to include the 12,000 square foot fit-up of the Art Gallery interior, as well as the removal of the existing small service elevator, replaced with a custom, oversized freight elevator.
The Atlantic Avenue Art Block is LEED NC Silver certified.
